In museums, floral designers create a piece to coordinate art on display. Local libraries and Chamber of Commerce combine their efforts with local art guilds and garden clubs to host a fun evening event. Libraries, art, flowers…what’s not to love? I decided this was an event I wanted to be involved in, both on the art and floral design aspect.</p><p>First up: the display case, I asked Fiona for help on this. Here’s what we put together for the event. This is my first year participating, but it provided a great opportunity to put my art to good use.</p><p>Happy Spring. I took inspiration from a book I recently finished, <i>To Speak For the Trees</i> by <a href="https://dianaberesford-kroeger.com/" target="_blank">Diana Beresford-Kroeger</a>. Diana is a world recognized botanist, medical biochemist and author. Her efforts and advocacy to develop a bio plan to restore the global forest is ongoing and impactful. A remarkable scientist and world climate change leader, she works tirelessly to illustrate the beauty and value of trees and forests. Her writings, interviews and film are poetic and informative.nanskidrewskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12578537371761302331noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5452888776708838055.post-4263248071010138562023-03-17T16:24:00.000-07:002023-03-17T16:24:16.342-07:00Pi Day<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheKVqAAbai0SoRrxr4glNhHcJZDvPSw0mI_WEU7c1AMEkOqgKJEXKcZPiOSTlpBQENUYrkyfOO3gKFQT0YQ_32LQ2wRlK0MIUowHBdHqXTJNlCTz0qj4fQmbW_wFEq7A6iTtfb58NrkhybkqhH0h8aMQnMud0marJ_RnPgvTTFhj53Kfnsk7QAlVyA/s4032/20230315_090610.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheKVqAAbai0SoRrxr4glNhHcJZDvPSw0mI_WEU7c1AMEkOqgKJEXKcZPiOSTlpBQENUYrkyfOO3gKFQT0YQ_32LQ2wRlK0MIUowHBdHqXTJNlCTz0qj4fQmbW_wFEq7A6iTtfb58NrkhybkqhH0h8aMQnMud0marJ_RnPgvTTFhj53Kfnsk7QAlVyA/s320/20230315_090610.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Here’s the book…</div><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid0_xkE29SovcN4hym_FM96Y-3AnwJPTxTXFgnCN0fk835hYsP35FHIyWJyxw8-taT4M9Zs0kQeiFwjOe1tIVL4Bajx9yUspx46hdrhKAYYQ3YOLGLJF-DIhh1XNUE2PBDvTsXL-75pIhx7rOZjGMDRgkLfz-6su7f_PzhFtgfhyZUzb7GOmMxD6q3/s4032/D5F3D545-FC5F-4266-A6E6-F0458BAE35B5.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid0_xkE29SovcN4hym_FM96Y-3AnwJPTxTXFgnCN0fk835hYsP35FHIyWJyxw8-taT4M9Zs0kQeiFwjOe1tIVL4Bajx9yUspx46hdrhKAYYQ3YOLGLJF-DIhh1XNUE2PBDvTsXL-75pIhx7rOZjGMDRgkLfz-6su7f_PzhFtgfhyZUzb7GOmMxD6q3/s320/D5F3D545-FC5F-4266-A6E6-F0458BAE35B5.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>Here’s the author being interviewed with a picture of one of her pies on screen.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhic4pq0L_nHqUqU0C731dQyLANPWrWI2dgBE3KssE9ByVu34hW6-xxs4TyfaPwRBMl4Fsw6ajsjgXSUzIHKUjs_E2fE4DEliK_ANmZxKzlgk3tHpUddDOj1o0WFT3nT1e7-3Zv9WZTTO47Ak3rOyF6naGp0QHZBA2_5CDtY79r7y9uOqqF9LhTl_m1/s4032/D27DFE9A-BD04-4CF2-8C06-948FF8E85182.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhic4pq0L_nHqUqU0C731dQyLANPWrWI2dgBE3KssE9ByVu34hW6-xxs4TyfaPwRBMl4Fsw6ajsjgXSUzIHKUjs_E2fE4DEliK_ANmZxKzlgk3tHpUddDOj1o0WFT3nT1e7-3Zv9WZTTO47Ak3rOyF6naGp0QHZBA2_5CDtY79r7y9uOqqF9LhTl_m1/s320/D27DFE9A-BD04-4CF2-8C06-948FF8E85182.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>This is City space, a favorite venue for inspiration.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH53GUorqilpsmp98V2gK6FROoY0C7QiLKAn63O3lxr4b396PWAPN4_WJeAFU4jKREMGckm-GKvoBcibKQw9gfqGUleHVSkNY6ueubKGCHGh88wkhcuLJ27AfJFAyz5qfnJZF8PulTG3fEAcEQbgdjl07cqdu_d1DiaQAtzT6pzThDkqbkwnzlKiQ6/s2640/E98D5983-8DF4-40CC-A583-7E522C3607F5.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1980" data-original-width="2640" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH53GUorqilpsmp98V2gK6FROoY0C7QiLKAn63O3lxr4b396PWAPN4_WJeAFU4jKREMGckm-GKvoBcibKQw9gfqGUleHVSkNY6ueubKGCHGh88wkhcuLJ27AfJFAyz5qfnJZF8PulTG3fEAcEQbgdjl07cqdu_d1DiaQAtzT6pzThDkqbkwnzlKiQ6/s320/E98D5983-8DF4-40CC-A583-7E522C3607F5.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /></div> Fiona and I braved the storm to head into Boston for the book tour, discussion, mini demonstration and a taste of her Happy as a Graham tart. January was dry January, with no alcohol. After that fun, February posed a new challenge, Frugal February, with no unnecessary spending or purchases. Ouch! Thank goodness I picked the shortest month of the year. Luckily, this isn’t a leap year. So far, I have been doing really well, and only succumbed to temptation once. I am thinking progress not perfection, so it’ s in the win column.</p><p>And now for my purchase.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhExo3xXCQWXG-lu6u-i_jSPPT8qotFAy1-WS9rBcJRwHmL4L_eHjcutfcWLB02Shov7667qIsAiIlURWBHIoUJd-vK2bmzGKcCOtGC33hW_USeZ-4mb2Krer57XcpafdeiPduH4luqtlFbo7JgVQUxhaK9vgt5Ihqik0iI-eZfUWMAIojiB0uh32MO/s251/DF23D306-E52C-4CEA-8DAA-E663ED39B8FF.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="251" data-original-width="201" height="251" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhExo3xXCQWXG-lu6u-i_jSPPT8qotFAy1-WS9rBcJRwHmL4L_eHjcutfcWLB02Shov7667qIsAiIlURWBHIoUJd-vK2bmzGKcCOtGC33hW_USeZ-4mb2Krer57XcpafdeiPduH4luqtlFbo7JgVQUxhaK9vgt5Ihqik0iI-eZfUWMAIojiB0uh32MO/s1600/DF23D306-E52C-4CEA-8DAA-E663ED39B8FF.png" width="201" /></a></div><p><br /></p>I attended Margaret Shepherd’s opening reception of her calligraphy from Song of Songs at Yale Divinity School. Grocery shopping in Wegman’s is a real treat and I don’t get there very often as I have a few shops much closer. I am also trying to keep my carbon footprint small, so I plan my errands with that in mind. Fortunately, I will be over in the Wegman’s area next week and will pick up some specialty items, flowers and a golden milk from the cafe. On my last trip to Costco, I saw that they are carrying the rhizomes (similar to ginger but smaller) in the fresh produce section. I am going to research how to prepare and cook with them before my next shopping expedition, so I will know if I will add them to my list. My reading choices are often made by looking at reviews, award winners, personal recommendations, a book written by a favorite author, a topic I find interesting or a book I have picked up when browsing the stacks. It’s no surprise then that I end up with so many I love and picking the top 21 has been a challenge. One book stands out as the clear favorite for number one.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhgO7RHZIkirY9YH9mfaZVYUkJeQcb2t_wFU1ZEtcbNCBDOCxtb-MuCAPw3iDIeHhbtV_MQKUmgKjtj7XqqRwdrYPT9kJnAoBonqALOw-6vdUOsZlixaXj0aoH8-lrJUnOd1AjMrn882kMk3rGT2R4LqC10XI7KfoL6s2_er8rpMxI7P1MQEuTsHOnD=s277" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="277" data-original-width="182" height="277" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhgO7RHZIkirY9YH9mfaZVYUkJeQcb2t_wFU1ZEtcbNCBDOCxtb-MuCAPw3iDIeHhbtV_MQKUmgKjtj7XqqRwdrYPT9kJnAoBonqALOw-6vdUOsZlixaXj0aoH8-lrJUnOd1AjMrn882kMk3rGT2R4LqC10XI7KfoL6s2_er8rpMxI7P1MQEuTsHOnD" width="182" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">My favorite book of 2021</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgeVDuavA8vbmcLL927VH1Fx-FNOyOVhWYxPKPgjoKOAhWoOc6ToYvufCwpCF2KpG4c_tkM2UZ2EM-VKtWBFi71H61kOpFB2wQ0iOi6IHAiVFkO0SlquSjWFBxizKZmlRyZcxI8oIbLFizISjgIy-Ait9c97KlSekJE35I8Sdxiv21ZC5MQOI4MnLIj=s275" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="275" data-original-width="183" height="275" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgeVDuavA8vbmcLL927VH1Fx-FNOyOVhWYxPKPgjoKOAhWoOc6ToYvufCwpCF2KpG4c_tkM2UZ2EM-VKtWBFi71H61kOpFB2wQ0iOi6IHAiVFkO0SlquSjWFBxizKZmlRyZcxI8oIbLFizISjgIy-Ait9c97KlSekJE35I8Sdxiv21ZC5MQOI4MnLIj" width="183" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Also on the list</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>I read Patrick Radden Keefe’s book <i>Say Nothing </i>for my library’s book club choice in March. I have been a long time admirer of her for intelligence, empathy, and insight. This book covers the socio economic divide, highlighting the lives of three factory workers. This book covers a range of topics including racism, sexism and politics. Until reading this book, I could never understand how Trump was able to dupe people into believing him. I have a better understanding of it now and the importance of having your voices heard. These three journalists/authors do an excellent job of bringing these stories to the forefront. </div><div><br /></div><div>Happy reading, because there is always more to learn.</div><div><i><br /></i></div>nanskidrewskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12578537371761302331noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5452888776708838055.post-47412119612244189752022-02-01T14:31:00.000-08:002022-02-01T14:31:23.403-08:00T stands for T caddy<p> We live in a house of tea lovers and Fiona and I love to try new teas. I am getting low on my favorite Tea and Trumpets Earl Grey Lavender. Eugene has put the kibosh on ordering new flavored tea until we go through some of our incredibly large stash. The blacked out area is an idea I got from Austin Klein’s book <i>Steal like an Artist. </i>Sometimes it can be hard to find the positive on the printed page; the challenge is to keep looking. Stay creative, stay hopeful and read some poetry. <p></p>nanskidrewskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12578537371761302331noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5452888776708838055.post-60075030535212505242022-01-04T17:12:00.001-08:002022-01-04T17:12:23.849-08:00T stands for toil<p> Although there was effort and learning in our watercolor class, it was more creative, fun and zen like. I love the results especially this watercolor by Fiona. The colors and serene atmosphere of this decomposing dory boat in the marshes of Ipswich is lovely. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; I did a little research when we got home on thoughtco.com The prism is known as a sun dog, which occurs in colder temperatures when sunlight interacts with large, flat hexagonal ice crystals. As sunlight hits the crystals, it is refracted bending and creating the spectrum of colors. Theories about the etymology of sun dog include Greek mythology ~Zeus walked his two dogs across the sky and Norse mythology (solhund) ~constellations of two hounds hunting the sun and moon. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJ3CHs0S97gplbXtvytK29ETrqlHsHXCco7rNkVrwSzI2cbx88PKjQA4V5Rfw41sB4s7kMWh-dCZKXcKvLeDV0RZ6lZkThJebHDfK_rcDt9OdDeFQo4UDu1Ri6Bik9AVQ7UJL_d-bQU1M/s3330/20211204_192150.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3330" data-original-width="1796" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJ3CHs0S97gplbXtvytK29ETrqlHsHXCco7rNkVrwSzI2cbx88PKjQA4V5Rfw41sB4s7kMWh-dCZKXcKvLeDV0RZ6lZkThJebHDfK_rcDt9OdDeFQo4UDu1Ri6Bik9AVQ7UJL_d-bQU1M/w216-h400/20211204_192150.jpg" width="216" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The ceiling at the Boch Center</div>Fi and I went to Brett Eldredge’s Glow Christmas concert at the Boch Center. Watercolor painting is fun and addictive. I am at the beginning stages of trying to master color mixing and glazes. Patience is required as you are layering the colors.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXJhSPFsE-HFCVr4HLR25HsQCrbOqQlXAdK7ZD8e6kAZlOvO8YRxj-X_W0VLLy5wK24ehmJgdfch_sFDuP3hJbHIEWDUKf3Gt_Or4rjW0wAyMn8e7WOE3cYIY3SiySVJBDBIb6Ivn7pCQ/s2480/20211119_190328.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1960" data-original-width="2480" height="316" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXJhSPFsE-HFCVr4HLR25HsQCrbOqQlXAdK7ZD8e6kAZlOvO8YRxj-X_W0VLLy5wK24ehmJgdfch_sFDuP3hJbHIEWDUKf3Gt_Or4rjW0wAyMn8e7WOE3cYIY3SiySVJBDBIb6Ivn7pCQ/w400-h316/20211119_190328.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Beach scene in winter from a photograph</div><br /><p>This was completed over a few weeks of class. Overall I felt happy with it when I finished although there was a lot of head scratching during the process. I have a few more that I am working on so I will post them on Watercolor Wednesday. They were easier in some ways - no snow, ice or crashing waves, but there were a few different challenges. It’s certainly a learning process!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQYDp3fI31mxlxIgF-m74GKzm2kL1LD1auF13UMS_JxTP-5kSY6-Az4UmjQnS830RJZZnK1h-S-5K8UhlOO029gigl7hD2GUprvJWkJc6LsWrLv3i3P_9_NaZmhHmWkzkj41Zwg9iLjSo/s2928/20211119_190230.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2928" data-original-width="1904" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQYDp3fI31mxlxIgF-m74GKzm2kL1LD1auF13UMS_JxTP-5kSY6-Az4UmjQnS830RJZZnK1h-S-5K8UhlOO029gigl7hD2GUprvJWkJc6LsWrLv3i3P_9_NaZmhHmWkzkj41Zwg9iLjSo/s320/20211119_190230.jpg" width="208" /></a></div>This is a pretty straightforward book that I ordered. It will be interesting to see what I come up with it using 3 colors and 3 brushes. Happy painting.<br /><p><br /></p>nanskidrewskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12578537371761302331noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5452888776708838055.post-73293337055383611302021-11-16T17:31:00.000-08:002021-11-16T17:31:11.032-08:00T stands for two times this year<p></p><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0px 40px; padding: 0px;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Last week was a beautiful week of unseasonably warm weather, so we headed off to do some apple picking.
