Words on Wednesday...Another 200th

Jane Austen, one of my favorite authors, was born on December 16, which was also my mom's birthday. For some crazy reason, I derive extreme joy from this. While my mom wasn't a famous author, she could craft a great story. In a quiet, unassuming way she could suss things out with humor and unique aplomb. Mom spent almost 20 years in a wheelchair, and that made her invisible to many people, but it gave her a great vantage point to witness life's intricacies.  I learned it's amazing what you can pick up when no one is noticing you. Like Jane, Mom was a keen observer of human nature.  In remembrance of Jane on the 200 anniversary of her passing on July 18, with a special nod to mom, here are some of my favorites:

It's tough to choose just one of Jane's novels as a favorite...so I will narrow it to three.  Pride and Prejudice, Emma and Mansfield Park. Well, maybe I will add, Sense and Sensibility and Persuasion for good measure!

For PBS adaptations, Emma, hands down, my favorite!

    How wonderful to honor Jane Austen. I never got into her books, except what was required in high school literature, but I am appreciative of her work. You did a wonderful thing honoring her like that.

    I enjoyed the day my girlies and me spent with you, your mother and your kids at Old Sturbridge Village when the kids were little.

    A couple of years ago, I thought I should try reading Jane Austen as I had never read anything by her. I tried to read Pride and Predjudice and couldn't slog through it. To me it was just talking heads.

    What a great tribute to Jane Austen and your mum 😀. I love all the cinema, Bollywood, Rom Com and mini series you have listed too! My favourite has to be Pride and Prejudice, who could not remember Colin Firth and I enjoyed the film with Kiera Knightly too although there is a little artistic licence adopted in the storyline ... lol 😉. Lost in Austen is great, I first saw it on TV and bought it just recently on DVD. I've not come across your latest read before though, thanks. Wishing you a Happy Friday and Weekend! J 😊

    Jane Austin and Charles Dickens were 2 of my best companions when I was younger, and I still love them, and it's great to pick up one of the books and start reading again and again. My husband was in a wheelchair for nearly 20 years, too, and I know what you mean about being overlooked, sad but true. Have a good start in the new week, hugs, Valerie

 I am a big fan of NPR and RBG and this book came highly recommended. It was refreshing to read about Nina Totenberg and her friendship with Ruth Bader Ginsberg, as well as with Cokie Roberts.  I am sure this will end up on my favorites of 2023. Nothing says traditions like a holiday...and in our house Birthdays have always been treated like holidays! We hold firmly to the belief that if there is a day you are ever going to celebrate, it's the day you were born. Luckily for Fi, her birthday is October 8, which coincides with Columbus day this year, extending the Birthday to Birthday weekend. We lined up all kinds of special treats, starting with a Half Marathon on Saturday, if you can call that a treat..followed up with  some other birthday specials, breakfast out at our favorite diner,  presents, bookstore coffee and browse around,  made to order breakfasts and dinners,  chocolate cake (yum!) and a wind down with one of our favorite hobbies on Monday... painting Halloween Vignette Years ago, I painted unfinished wood and sold it at craft fairs. T stands for time together...in Ireland.  Heading to Ireland for a mini break provides a welcome respite from hustle and bustle. It's a chance to enjoy life at a slower pace, and get outside and enjoy nature. There is no place that we find as peaceful, and walking the country roads never gets old. Fortunately the weather cooperated, and the days are long...daylight until almost 10 o'clock at night, which leaves plenty of time for walking everyday. Our range was between 6 and 13 miles per day, making the most of our time outside. Not many people on our route, but not short of company. The dairy farm and creamery is just down the road, so you know our milk is fresh!  Sometimes, after a long walk, a cuppa and a biscuit aren't enough.
